NALERIGU, Ghana (BP) — Villagers line up outside the Baptist Medical Centre in northern Ghana as soon as the sun peeks over the mountains of this mud-hut town.

A baby sweating with malaria fever. A woman with a cough that could be tuberculosis. A farmer bitten by a cobra in the fields. Hypertension, hernias, tumors — just a few of the ailments among the 600 patients waiting on the outpatient porch.

“Looks like it’s going to be another long day,” says missionary doctor George Faile III, one of only two doctors on staff at the hospital, which was founded 50 years ago by the International Mission Board.

The hospital could sure use more hands to help cover the patient load, says Faile.

According to the World Health Organization, the United States has about one doctor for every 400 people. Ghana has about one doctor for every 6,600 people. Even then, the Ghanaian doctors tend to stay in the more developed areas of the country instead of villages like Nalerigu.

The medical center regularly recruits doctors, residents and fourth-year medical students to volunteer as little as two weeks or as long as a year. Nearly 200 came in 2008, but the hospital needs even more.

“They really help us manage the load,” says Faile. “Even though a lot of them are students or residents, they are able to help us see patients in clinics and take calls at night. They also do rounds and some of the minor procedures.”

The IMB offers a Medical Receptor program for medical residents and fourth-year medical students who want to offer their services overseas. The program covers nearly all costs for those who are active in a Southern Baptist church and agree to serve eight to 12 weeks.

That sounded perfect to Heidi Haun, a member of Seminole First Baptist Church in Florida and a fourth-year surgical student who is considering a call to missions. Before she headed to Ghana, she attended a Baptist Global Medical Alliance conference sponsored by the IMB. The gathering offers Southern Baptist medical professionals an opportunity to discuss becoming volunteers with medical missionaries from all over the world.

“I thought that if I am planning on pursuing a career in medical missions, this was a great way to get my feet wet and to reconfirm my passion,” said Haun, who came to Ghana for 12 weeks with her husband and child.

During her stint at the hospital, Haun treated snake bites that would have resulted in death without anti-snake venom. She cleaned abdomens perforated by advanced typhoid. When she diagnosed patients with terminal cancer, she shared about eternal hope in Christ.
Moments like those helped confirm Haun’s calling.

“I remember walking back to my house from the hospital one night and thinking, ‘I could feel at home here.’”

That blend of medical and spiritual treatment is a unique draw to the hospital.

“We’re unlimited in how we can approach patients spiritually,” explains Earl Hewitt, the other doctor on staff at the hospital. “In the States, you might not be able to present the Gospel. That might be considered infringing on patients’ rights. Here, we are free to [talk about Jesus], and we do it as often as we can.”

Haun enjoyed praying with patients before every surgery. Julie Myhren, a fourth-year pharmacy student who attends Oak Grove Baptist Church in Bel Air, Md., was invited to lead the daily devotional for hospital staff and patients. Myhren volunteered for 12 weeks at the Ghana hospital.

And Dr. William Prine, who has been practicing medicine in Clarksville, Tenn., for 34 years, had a unique opportunity to share Christ during his two weeks in Nalerigu.
A patient who had broken his leg weeks before — and did not seek medical attention —finally came to the doctor when infection set in.

Prine, who attends of First Baptist Church in Clarksville, Tenn., noticed the man needed blood. Prine’s blood type was a match.

He gave his own blood and took the opportunity to tell the man about Jesus Christ, the ultimate blood donor.

“I began talking to the man by acknowledging that I had given him blood to prolong his physical life,” Prine said. “I then told him I wanted to tell him about the blood Jesus had shed for him.”

The man prayed the sinner’s prayer and received Jesus as Lord and Savior. The next day, he asked Prine for a Bible.

“I have never felt so in the presence of God as during my time in Nalerigu,” Prine said. “I want to see more volunteers there. They need two other doctors there 52 weeks of the year. “

We were blessed to have a lot of people come our way in May. There was quite a variety of people and they each added something unique to the place.

Dr. Sam Gillis is a retired surgeon from Birmingham, Alabama. This was his second visit with us and he was a tremendous help. He was here for about a month and did nearly 100 cases.

Dr. Erle Kirby, a general surgeon from Canada, also made his second trip to BMC and worked with Dr. Gillis for a couple of weeks. He has been coming to Ghana to help in a clinic in Tamale for several years and just last year came to work with us here. We are glad he did and hope he can come again.

Tanna Donalson is a PA student from Oklahoma. She came with her husband, Shane and some of their friends, Elisabeth Diefenderfer, Jennifer Dierksen and Micael Latshaw. Her friends stayed for only about a week, but Tanna stayed on and worked with us for about a month. She also brought a lot of supplies and drugs made possible by a grant from the PA Foundation.

Jane Park, a former missionary to Ghana came for a visit with Ronna Ward, Austen Ward and Brooke Perrin. They helped out in various areas of the hospital. Some worked in the supply store and some helped to organize and straighten out the OR office.

Dr. David Stockton, faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine University of Tennesee School of Medicine came for his second visit and brought one of his residents, Todd Montgomery. Rose Marie Spangle, a lab tech, joined them. They were a big help, seeing patients in clinic, taking call and helping with minor procedures in the OR. Rose Marie brought a very nice microscope for the lab.

Justin Chan and Stevienne Tam are two fourth year medical students from Hong Kong. We enjoyed having them here observing how we do things and learning about tropical diseases. They added to our international mix.

Chris Pittman and Beth Jones are two nurses from Mississippi. They came for a one week visit and it was a pleasure to have them with us as they observed the work here and learned about what is going on here.

Dr. Colleen Crowe is an Emergency Physician resident who also spent about a month working with in April and May. She was a big help and we really enjoyed having her here. She worked hard seeing patients in clinic, taking call and helping out in the OR. We apologize for leaving her off the list in the initial post. We wish her all the best as she finishes her residency and starts to work.

As you can see we had a good variety of people come our way to help and we greatly appreciate the interest and support of so many.

During April we had a large number of very helpful volunteers. They came as students, residents and as retired or practicing physicians.

Kathryn Hunt is a fourth year medical student from Florida. She will be graduating soon and going to Washington state for Family Practice residency. We hope some of the things she experienced and learned at BMC will be helpful as she starts residency.

Elizabeth Kunkel is also a fourth year student who will be starting her internal medicine residency. She is from New Jersey. You can check out her blog at www.elizabethghana.blogspot.com.

We also had a group from West Virginia University, four students and two faculty supervisors. Check out their blog to learn more about each of them and what they experienced. Dr. Sarah Moerschel arrived first with Mary Ann Kroll, Kevara Vaughn and Tracey Melham. Dr. Moerschell left and was replaced by Dr. Shelley Nuss and Rebecca Reece. We hope this will just be the first of other teams from WVU to come and work with us.

Dr. Dewey Dunn and Dr. Roy Renfroe returned again to work with us. They were joined on this trip by Ginger Hiley, a nurse. All of them were a big help. Dr. Dunn enjoyed having students and residents to teach and talk with with. Dr. Renfroe helped by doing a lot of surgery for us. Ginger helped the doctors and did some cleaning and organizing in the OR.

Dr. Brendan Reagan and Dr. George Sun are internal medicine residents who came and worked with us for about a week. Both are going to be doing fellowships when they finish residency. They were joined in Nalerigu by George’s brother Jerry who is a PA.

Christy Lee is a fourth year student from South Carolina. She had been in Nalerigu a couple of years ago so was not new to BMC. She will also be graduating soon and starting an OB/Gyn residency in July.

We thank all of those who came and all who supported them. We enjoyed getting to know everyone and appreciated their help and encouragement.

We certainly enjoyed having her and she was a great help in covering surgery call and doing elective procedures. She was sorry that she never did see a case of typhoid perforation which has been fairly common in the past. She was also disappointed that she did not get to see a cobra. Hopefully, what she was able to do and see more than made up for what she missed.

We wish her all the best as she completes her residency and makes decisions about where to use her skills and talents. Maybe she will come back to BMC one of these days.

We had a good number of people come to work with us in February. Medical students, residents, practicing physicians, a dentist and family.

Dr. Chris Sizemore is a Ob/Gyn resident who came for three weeks and helped a lot by doing c-sections and other gyn cases. Dr. Ty Babcock came at the same time. He is an Emergency Medicine resident and was a big help in doing minor procedures, taking call and assisting with surgery. Chris and Ty worked together a lot of the time they were here. Both of them are at Vanderbilt for residency.

Dr. Faith Chisum and her sister Joy Leitzau came to Africa to visit their brother who is a missionary in Togo. They came and spent a week with us to see what we are doing. We enjoyed having them with us. Faith is a family practice resident and Joy is a nurse.

Dr. Fuller Robinson is a long term volunteer. He has been coming to work with us here for more than 20 years. He is a dentist from Roanoke, VA. He takes care of our teeth and works with our public health department in the villages. This year he discovered a village where people have been drinking well water for the past 15 years and have bone deformities and “mottled” teeth from excess flouride in the well water. His granddaughter, Dana, came with him this year and it was nice to have her here. She is interested in photography and enjoyed observing some of our surgical procedures.

Dr. Jackie Kerr is a general surgeon who has been here a number of times on the past. He was part of a team that allowed the regular doctors to take some time off. He did a lot of surgery and we always appreciate his help.

Dr. Beverly Jones and Dr. Chris Lui are residents from Canada who came to work with us for a couple of weeks. They were traveling through Africa and arrived in Nalerigu after traveling by road from Burkina Faso. They assisted in clinic and helped with call and minor procedures.

Dr. Julie Kang is an Ob/Gyn from Miami, Florida. She has been here many times in the past and is always a big help. Angel Rivera is a medical student from Miami who came with here for the second time. Julie not only does gyn surgery but takes call and does some emergency general surgery.

Dr. Paul Shumpert put together a team to come and help toward the end of January and into February. Dr. Shumpert is President of the board of the George Faile Foundation and has been to BMC several times. He is an Emergency Room physician in Rome, Georgia.

Dr. Walt Boutwell made his first visit to BMC. He was sick when he first arrived, but recovered and stayed to work. He is a Neonatologist from Montgomery, Alabama. He helped care for a number of very sick babies and had a lot of suggestions to make for improvements.

Wes Turner is an Electrical Engineer from Rome, Georgia and has been to BMC on a number of occasions to help improve the electrical system at the hospital.

Chuck Holmes is a pharmacist and he also made his first trip to BMC. He seemed to enjoy his time here and we expect to see him back some day. He, of course, helped out in the pharmacy, but also took a trip out to some of the nearby villages with Tommy Harrison.

Doug Johnson is a fourth year medical student from Birmingham, Alabama. He had planned to go to Kenya for his overseas experience, but when problems developed there, he asked to come with the others to Nalerigu. We enjoyed his time with us and hope he is not disappointed in his second choice.

Dr. Bud Young an OB/Gyn from Tennessee and Dr. Megan Shaw, a second year internal medicine/pediatric resident came as a team for a couple of weeks this month. Dr. Young was able to help by doing a number of gyn surgeries for us and handling our emergency c-sections. Dr. Shaw helped by taking call, seeing patients in clinic and assisting with minor procedures. We enjoyed having them with us.

Dr. Tomas Rebora came in October at time when we were really short. He is from Argentina and was in Ghana to work at a nearby hospital. He came to BMC to do part of his orientation to enable him to be licensed in Ghana. He was with us for three months and was a big help in taking call, seeing clinic patients and assisting in the OR. We wish him all the best as he heads to Guinea to work.

Maryse Larouche is a third year medical student from Canada. We enjoyed having her with us as she learned about medical work in the developing world and assisted us with call, in clinic and in the OR. We hope the time she spent with us will help her decide what specialty she will pursue after medical school.

Jane is a nurse anesthetist and Carol is a nurse. George and Mary Ann were the team leaders. They brought a lot of supplies for the hospital and they stayed busy seeing patients and doing surgery.
